India's

We had a post here about International Womens day asking how we planned to celebrate it. I knew nothing about it and last night decided to see what other women did to celebrate. I quickly got side tracked by numerous references to the documentary India's that was supposed to be released that day. As I followed that trail there was so many opinions to be had about it I found the documentary on U-tube (you know what I mean) to see what it was all about. All I can say is wow!

Misogyny is definitely alive and well everywhere, not just India. While most men don't have such extreme views towards women every so often you you can pick out a person in a crowd that has at least a touch of it. They are the ones that no matter what the subject is, their response about women are always cast them in a negative light. Usually when they behave badly towards women it never is their fault and somehow the women did something to deserve the poor treatment. You see the difference between how they treat men vs women in the workplace. Not occasionally but always.

My questions are for both the men and the women in our family. First, have you seen the documentary? Second, how do you handle the blatant and subtle misogyny that you see around you?

I have not seen the film, but I have definitely seen the discrimination. When I experience it I tend to get stubborn and keep pushing my opinions, ideas and plan forward in spite of the opposition. I also warn any other women likely to encounter these particular men to be aware.
Just because I got boobs doesn't mean I do not have a higher IQ then most of those men.

I remember interviewing a man to be my assistant. I was going over his experience and type of work that he had done and he actually stopped me in the middle of the interview. He didn't think he should have to answer technical related questions from someone in HR. He actually told me he thought he was wasting his time and asked me to introduce him to someone that would understand the answers he was giving. That was my first experience with someone that truly thought women were a lesser human. I have seen touches of it before but not to that level.

I didn't hire him. He was under qualified for the job but I frequently will hire someone that is under qualified if they have a solid thought process for thinking through problems. I can teach technical but you can't teach logic. Someone like that would not be open to learning and would not work well on a team.

I found some other great examples that show the different degrees that we face and now of them even include the whole double standard that we gave when it comes to sex.

This is from the man's perspective.
You're doing a home repair project, and you run to the hardware store because you need some advice on the right tool to use. There is a female employee near the door, unoccupied. There is a male employee towards the back stocking shelves.

Sexism: You walk to the back to ask the man for advice. He says you should talk to the woman because she's an expert. Huh. You think it's odd, but decide there has to be *one* woman out there who knows this stuff, and you've just met her.

Male Chauvinism: You walk to the back to ask the man for advice. He says you should talk to the woman because she's an expert. She says something about needing copper wire, but you totally know that she's wrong. She is kinda hot though... maybe you can get her number later.

Misogyny: You walk to the back to ask the man for advice. He says you should talk to the woman because she's an expert. You refuse. What the hell does a woman know about home repair?

That was hard to proof on a phone... It should say - I found some other great examples that show the different degrees that we face and NONE of them even include the whole double standard that we FACE when it comes to sex.

That's awesome! It is an accomplishment to raise a daughter that is confident and strong. You should be proud of yourself too.

And then this one again from the male perspective.
You are sitting next to a woman in a coffee shop. You hear her tell a friend that she just bought tickets to a football game.

Sexism: I hope she's bringing her boyfriend. It would be a real shame to waste TWO football stadium tickets on women.

Male Chauvinism: It's adorable when women pretend to be interested in sports. You should probably go mansplain** the rules of football to her, so she knows what's going on when she gets to the game.

Misogyny: You know what's wrong with football? All these bitches who show up at the games, don't have a clue what's going on, and nag you the whole time about cursing and drinking.

Everyone please watch Emma Watson's UN speech. She makes several great points about feminism...and also the role men can/should play to help. Personally I treat everyone fairly. Race, religion, creed, sexual orientation, financial status etc.....none of these matter to me. Character and personality do. Human rights are what we should be focused on, it is all-encompassing...womens rights, civil rights, religious freedom and so on. Think about it, in the end isnt that what we all want, to be treated equally? Sometimes we unknowingly undermine our own good deeds.

I did watch the speech as you suggested. My son is a single father so I see how some of the points she makes impacts him.

No women are not treated equally...neither are most non-whites,gays,Muslims,disabled or mentally challenged persons.... thats the only point I had...if we all did a better job of being fair to everyone it would go a long way towards addressing these issues.

I completely agree.

One more thing, men who do not respect women absolutely disgust me... these are our mothers, sisters and wives, the ones who birth and nourish us, I never understood how you cant respect that to the fullest
